6 A three-and-a half-hour-long restoration of the "director's ideal cut" of the 1982 German "anti-war" film that has racked up the all-time box office record in the United States for any foreign-language film, this should be worthy of another generation's attention.

Nominated for six academy awards in its original release, this film is described as "relentless"—the tension aboard a German submarine during World War Two almost never stops. A paean to survival, as an experience this is rather like watching two well-matched teams at sport. The only message here is that war is hell, but if you already know that it might still pack as much punch as a meeting of the Buffalo Bills and the 49ers. But don't place any bets on the outcome.

Redoing the sound in digital surround effect has made the sense of claustrophobia on the crowded sub even more realistic.
