Technical Writer, web developer

  • Working with the knowledge management team, my duties and assignments have included being the principle tech writer of various book-length user guides and numerous data sheets documenting the features, operation, and market advantages of programmable logic devices. Also includes creating our team's web pages and making documentation appropriate and ready for access online, using text-based HTML, DreamWeaver, and Adobe Acrobat.Have also used FrontPage and Robohelp.

October 1998 - January 2000 | Tava|R.W. Beck, llc. | Los Angeles, CA

Y2K Specialist, Technical Writer

  • My duties and assignments have included being the principle tech writer on Y2K contingency plans for 16 Business Units of Tava|Beck's client, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. In addition, I have edited and contributed technical writing to the Program Management Plan, the LADWP's primary Year 2000 preparedness document. 
  • I am also responsible for creating both the text and rendering in HTML the home page on the Department's Y2K intranet website, which includes latest news updates on the program.

  • As the company’s sole tech writer, I wrote user interfaces and online help files for financial planning software, user support documentation, and documentation for a knowledge management system.

Webmaster/publisher

  • Founded and continue to maintain the Nanty Glo Home Page, serving my home town of Nanty Glo, Pa., with thousands of pages, graphics, and streaming videos.
  • Create, prepare, edit and provide all material for a this community online newspaper that is updated weekly and often more often.

Consultant-web designer

  • Consulted and worked on major projects involving many web tools and applications, including HTML and Java, PhotoShop, and MS FrontPage.
  • Created the HTML on catalog sections including Eljer and Acutherm, major corporate clients.

 

1994–96 | Times Newspaper Group | San Jose, CA

Webmaster/editor

  • Designed, created in hypertext markup language, edited, transferred to Unix Internet domain, and maintained hundreds of worldwide web pages logging all articles carried in the Times newspapers.
  • Maintained the Times interactive movie, editorial issues, and religion and ethics forums; created graphics for the site using scanning and graphics software.
  • The site which I created was among the first 75 online newspapers in the world.

  • 1996-present. Under the pen names Brian Conley and Dan Howard, have researched and written articles on the future of high speed modem communication, the limits of personal computing capacity, hardware companies moving into software production, incubators for hatching businesses, the implications of the Texaco case for future minority employment and advancement, and so on.   • Planned the area’s major writers’ service company and all of its projects in conjunction with owner Steve Lester. Designed and executed membership program, conducted extensive marketing writing program through editing of monthly magazine, catalogues, advertising and promotional literature, organized seminar curriculum with as many as three dozen teachers per quarter, and regularly taught half a dozen seminars on writing, publishing, and the freelance business.
